President’s Message – June 2022

It’s Spring! Almost summer! Yea! The warmer weather draws us all to come out of the caves we’ve been hibernating in all winter. Whether it’s to hit the courts, the links, the lakes, or just dig in the garden, warmer weather and sunny skies encourages us to get busy.

Another aspect of Spring is Memorial Day on May 30, followed by Flag Day on June 14. While for many people it marks the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day is also one of our most important national holidays – a day when we honor those who have died in our nation’s wars. Here are a few interesting facts about Memorial Day:

1.  Memorial Day is specifically dedicated to armed forces personnel who have died in action. There is also a day for Veterans (Veteran’s Day) as well as Armed Forces Day, dedicated to those currently serving.

2.  Memorial Day is basically the US equivalent of Remembrance Day (originally Armistice Day from WW1), observed on November 11 in the UK.

3.  Some people wear a red poppy in remembrance of those fallen in war – a tradition that began with a WW1 poem (“In Flanders Fields”).

4.  On Memorial Day, the US Flag should be flown at half-mast from dawn until noon only. From noon to dusk it should be flown at full.

5.  Memorial Day wasn’t the first name for the holiday. It was first called Decoration Day because it was a day to decorate the graves of lost loved ones.

Our June HOA Social will be on June 14, which is Flag Day. It will be an important time to recognize veterans who live in the village. The VFW will be with us to demonstrate how to correctly fold a US Flag and we will be giving away a US Flag that has flown over the Capital. Smokey Mountain Service Dogs will also be with us to provide a demonstration of their training program. In addition, there will be music and prizes. Wear your red, white, and blue and come have a great time!

I want to thank everyone who took the time to vote in the recent May 3 primary. The next election date is August 4 when we’ll be voting for State and Federal Primary candidates, plus the County General Election. Early voting will be July 15-30. Based on the many positive comments we received after the last round of Candidates Forums, the HOA Board has decided to hold another round of Candidate Forums in support of this next election cycle. We’re currently working on the details and will let you know as soon as we can what the plan is.

Neighborhood Watch is holding a village-wide meeting at the Yacht Club on May 24, 5:30-7pm. Please plan to attend and learn about the recent changes to the NW program. Sheriff-elect Jimmy Davis will be attending and participating in the discussion. If you are new to the village and have not yet attended the Tellico Village Welcome Orientation, please consider participating in the next event on June 7. To attend you must sign up on TellicoLife. You can find more information in the Event Calendar on TellicoLife.

Fantasy Casino Night is on June 5! Leave your money at home. We’ll be using “funny money” to play blackjack, roulette, craps, and poker. Our professional dealers will be giving lessons for those who are new to this. Great music, prizes, and a buffet dinner (no dishes to do!). It will be a really fun time for everyone. Sign-up’s close on May 26, so don’t delay. Sign up on TellicoLife.

It’s time to get out of your cave! Get out there and enjoy all that Tellico Village has to offer!
