More on the Bowman Estate

Last month, we provided an article regarding the history of the Bowman Estate, a historical property within Tellico Village.  This article will discuss some recent developments and will provide a little more information on the estate established about 200 years ago.

Recent Developments.  We have had some positive reports in the past month.  The POA Architectural Control Committee (ACC) has been in discussions with the current owners of Lot 1 of the Bowman Estates.  They report that the owners now plan to build a single home on the property in accordance with the deed restrictions and will submit a permit in the future.  We certainly applaud the ACC for their communication, hard work and efforts to maintain the historical significance of the estate and congratulate them on this success.

It is also reported that the owner will be conducting maintenance on the Bowman House in the future.  The house is on the National Register of Historic Places and should be maintained in accordance with their guidelines in order to remain on the register.  The Tellico Reservoir Development Agency (TRDA) has stated that they sold the property and no longer have any connection to or responsibility for it.  The State Historical Preservation Officer (SHPO) has stated that they let the maintenance memorandum of agreement expire more than a decade ago and are now working to reestablish it with the property owner.  If you are interested in finding out the latest status of the new agreement, the Tennessee State Historic Preservation Officer is:

An Update on the Estate.  Last month, I stated that the Lot 1 contained the Bowman house and cemetery.  It does contain the Bowman house, however, the cemetery is a separate property called the “Blair Cemetery Exception” on the plat.  It is reportedly still owned by the Bowman and Blair families.  It is currently being manicured by Village neighbors from Tanasi Coves and we thank them for that!
